Best Ceramic Coating for Cars Buyer’s Guide
Formula:
This is not inherently the most important quality, but it will give you the most general information on what to expect.
Different substances are better or worse for various situations. Knowing what your “ceramic” coating is actually made of can go a long way in telling you. How it will actually perform and whether it is right for you or not.
Keep in mind, all formulas operate under similar principles but get there in different ways.
Polymer Formulas
Polymer – This type of ceramic coating is made of one or more different resins that actually bond with the paint of the car to form the best car paint protection.
These ceramic coatings are often some of the longest lasting and most durable, but they may not offer the absolutely most luminous shine. However, these ceramic coatings are easier to apply without streaking and also often come with more protections than others.
Quartz Formulas
Quartz – This is the other most common material used for the best ceramic coat car paint protection formula. Though the quartz itself is actually suspended in a resin.
However, the quartz does prevent the complete bonding with the car’s paint, though it can still be incredibly long-lasting. On top of that, it also offers perhaps the best gloss that you can get. As the light bounces and is reflected by the microscopic quartz crystals.
Quartz formulas are also noted for being durable while they are on. But also able to be removed without damaging the paint underneath.
Protections:
This is what matters most when purchasing a ceramic coating, though convenience may dictate otherwise to some. Still, the different ways that a ceramic coating can protect your car definitely stands above lifespan and ease of application in the long run.
Having to reapply the ceramic coating every couple years sure beats having to deal with acid damage or temperature cracking.
It is also worth remembering that many of these ceramic coatings can also protect other parts of the car. And even other automobile items altogether.
Water Protection
Water – This is generally the main protection that people look for with a ceramic coating–though many more are available.
Still, the continuous “wet” or “mirror” finish with a high-gloss. Reflection is primarily why people seek out ceramic coatings.
In this regard, few ceramic coatings are not hydrophobic with the standard of contact angle generally sitting around 110 to 120-degrees. It is worth noting that the high gloss and hydrophobic effects are often related. But there are ways to tweak the formula that result in one or the other improving separately.
The most impressive formulas use the water it repels to actually clean itself with friction.
UV Radiation Protection
UV – This is becoming a more common type of protection. As people begin to realize UV radiation is responsible for degrading their car’s color.
Keep in mind, UV radiation does not really break down the paint’s molecular structure. That is the heat carried by the totality of the sun’s rays, of which UV radiation is just a part.
That said, some ceramic coatings can be used on a wide range of materials. Some of these materials are more susceptible to UV radiation damage than your paint which will mostly just dull in color.
This is a good feature to look for if you expect to keep the vehicle for a decade or longer.
Scratch Protection
Scratches – By its very nature, most ceramic coatings offer protections from physical flaws and blemishes.
However, what kind of imperfections the coating is meant to defend will differ from product to product.
Most ceramic coatings will at the minimum offer mar protections which protect against the long-term micro-damage all things sustainable.
Some of the more durable ceramic coatings will also offer legitimate scratch protection too.
Just make sure that the ceramic does not display the damage otherwise meant for your car’s exterior, or it will not matter much to the eye.
Chemical Protection
Chemical – Technically, chemical protections come in a few forms. But manufacturers rarely protect against one or two and leave out any others.
Basically, chemical protections cover the various types of petroleum-based chemicals used as well as acidic or basic chemicals.
In general, this has a tendency to cover most of the chemicals you are liable to use on a car.
It is worth noting that the acid protection is meant to also extend to acid rain. Which is meaningful if you live near manufacturing regions.
Weather Protection
Weather – This protection is less common but not uncommon. Basically, this protects your car’s exterior from changes in temperature–a common reason for the paint cracking over time.
As the temperature rises, the paint expands. When the temperature drops, the paint contracts, and cracks.
Ceramic coatings with weather protection prevent this process, though some coatings only offer protection from the cold.
However, heat protection is likely on the rise with global temperatures in the near future.
Conclusion
In the end, the CarGuys is probably the best car coating for most people. Especially for those who have never professionally detailed a car before.
The formula is extremely easy to apply and cures much quicker than the other options. Though you will have to reapply this formula far more often, it is less expensive.
If you want something a bit more permanent, then the Color N Drive offers a similarly inexpensive option.
While it does not provide the absolute best finish we saw, it is still easy to apply and offers solid protection.
Just make sure to cure it properly or else it might develop a tacky finish.
